So often I hear teachers referred to as “the sage on the stage” but this is no longer the best approach. In the information age, our “sage-ness” must be different.
I would contend that the modern teacher is now a director. The director works off camera. He/she is rarely part of the action. Their work is not to be onscreen for all to see, their magic is being behind the scenes, urging and cajoling greatness out of their actors.
While some directors get publicity most do their best work while no one is looking, out of the spotlight.
Teachers should also do this! Getting the best from their students through coaching, coercing, and directing learning. students are the actors, they are the stars of learning. Our job is to help them make the magic happen!
